LUC UK: Assessment Center Social Event

February 12th, 2013: Loughborough, England

Dave Jenner organised the ACSE for the evening of Tuesday 12th February 2013 from beginning to end, with some ideas and input from myself. With our budget of 125 € (roughly £100), we had finger food to serve us all at Browns Lane Bar & Restaurant, based near the town centre of Loughborough. From what we had learnt throughout the UNITECH year, we made sure that we turned up before 19:00 to make sure everything ran smoothly.

It was great to have Abdi come down and join us, giving us a chance for a mini-reunion - UNITECH 2011/12 UK trio. We were joined by Gaia and Jessica, the 2nd semester incoming UNITECH students of 2012/13. So far, they had enjoyed their time at Loughborough and were getting involved with the Loughborough Student Experience. Shortly after our discussion, David Ward and 3 of the 4 assessors turned up and the evening then started.

We were served a selection of finger food which included a vegetarian option along with healthy salads. There was plenty of food for the nine of us, and we enjoyed a hearty discussion throughout the evening as though we had known each other for a long time. This evening provided a great networking opportunity for all of us and re-ignited the UNITECH spirit.

On the day of the assessment centre, we had 6 students who made it through to the final stage. It was a good feeling when Dave and I found out that all of them were successful for getting onto the UNITECH programme 2013/14. Slowly but surely, students are learning that there is one thing you should do whilst at Loughborough - apply for the UNITECH programme.

LUC Italy: Assessment Center Social Event

February 27th, 2013: Milan, Italy

Last Wednesday 27th of February, the UNITECH evaluation comitee, headed by David Ward, moved to Milan to support the Assessment Centre for 2013 wave. Taking advantage of this event, the Local Chapter organized a tipical Italian "aperitivo" with the UNITECH community based on Milan. Delicious pasta and wine tasting surrounded a nice chance to get in touch with Corporate Partners, Alumni and current students. Remarkable presence of the everyday bigger community working for Vodafone, massive presence of 2010 Italian wave and the full of energy new UNITECHs in Milan for their Accademic exchange or Internship.

UAA Symposium 2013 - Informal Leadership

February 1st-3hr, 2013: Lyon, France

On the first weekend in February, fourty-two eager minds met in Lyon, France, to explore the topic “Informal Leadership - How to lead your boss?”. The welcome speach was given by a special guest: the Director of INSA de Lyon, our new Academic Partner. This was followed by presentations, group discussions and, of course, informal interactions during the coffee breaks. On Sunday, the participants enjoyed a guided tour of Lyon’s major sights. All in all, a very successful event!

You can first the first pictures of the tour on Sunday here: More are to come soon

LUC Switzerland: First events in the new year

February 2013: Zurich, Switzerland

Through a corporate partner company visit in January and the pre assessment center social event in February we have had a great start of the year in the Swiss chapter.

10 UAA members have had the pleasure to get good insight into the network's youngest corporate partner Optotune. This CP is under the leadership of two of the earliest Unitech alumni: Mark Blum and Manuel Aschwanden. After the start as an ETH spinoff they have been in the market of specialized optics for a few years now and the company is prospering well with currently around 30 employees. Their two main product types are focus-tunable lenses and laser speckle reducers - check their website for more information if you're interested.

After an interactive presentation by Mark where he told us about the early phase of the company and the challenges which they faced and solved, they offered pizza and beer for everyone - a gesture which was well appreciated and led the evening to a pleasant end. I'd also like to mention their awesome customized "Don't lose focus" glasses which they had made, and we even got to take one home each! Furthermore the outcome of the visit has also been very satisfactory for Optotune as they were able to hire an intern (almost) on the spot who is now working there.

The social event in February was the one that happened in all local chapters: the evening before the assessment center the assessors and the UAA members got together for dinner, drinks and talks. We went to a Spanish restaurant called "Tasca Romero" where we enjoyed delicious and authentic tapas for all tastes. We were espacially impressed by the Chorizo Diablolo, a sausage which comes with a bit of alcohol and is lit on fire after they put it down on the table.

LUC Sweden: Assessment Center Social Event

January 30th, 2013: Gothenburg, Sweden

During the evening on 30.01.2013 there was a lot of activity going on in Gothenburg. Regardless the cold, the assessors for the upcoming assessment centre were there to prepare the event, together with the local administrators from Chalmers and the old man as we all know as David!

The local chapter then seized its opportunity to gather around an ontray with Swedish specialties and it all turned out to be a great event. To our big surprise a large number of older Alumni showed up and that is exactly how we want it to continue. There was a lot of chatting during the evening and I believe that everyone felt that they were part of a great network. Let us keep up the good work and thank you all for a great evening.
