LUC Italy: Christmas Dinner

December 2, 2011: Milan,Italy

On a mild Friday evening in a Milan already dressed for Christmas time, LUC Italy organized the traditional Christmas dinner. We took the opportunity to gather together after the presentation of the UNITECH Program to new potential applicants for the next year. On the Navigli already full of lights and colours we enjoyed a nice dinner in a typical Napoletan pizzeria. More than 10 people joined the evening: the big group of new students and some alumni from different years. It has been a great opportunity to keep up to date with our experiences and plan future interesting activities as a ski trip on the Alps (hoping for the snow to come soon!) The “official” event closed with a round of Mirto, a typical liquor from Sardegna, the region of origin of our LUC Andrea, but many of us carried on with a disco party at the Alcatraz!

We, the LUCs, would like to thank all the participants for the great time, and we hope to meet them and many others at the next events!

LUC Germany: Innovation at SCHOTT – A tradition more than 125 years old

November 7, 2011: Aachen, Germany

UNITECH is supported by international technology companies, but how do these companies generate technology? Where does the innovation come from that leads to an ongoing successful business development in the high tech environment?
The LUC Aachen had the very fortunate opportunity to find out during the event “Innovation at SCHOTT – A tradition more than 125 years old”. Our special guest of the evening Dr. Reiner Mauch, head of Coorporate Business Development at SCHOTT AG, presented SCHOTT and its innovation management system.
After a short introduction to the company, its business units and their products Dr. Mauch gave an overview over the initial innovations that started the growth of SCHOTT to becoming the biggest manufacturer of high tech glass in the world. Innovation at SCHOTT happens on two different levels. On the business unit level innovations are aligned with the respective business unit strategy. The strategy is translated into innovation goals for the respective products. These are then developed in projects with a horizon of three to five years. Developments which are associated with a higher failure risk are researched in a corporate research facility. These projects are usually the ones leading to so called disruptive innovations. An innovation in the eyes of SCHOTT is a novelty which has not existed before, is recognized as new and provides a perceived added customer value. This also applies for many further developments of existing products. A disruptive innovation creates something which has not existed before and opens a new market.
Besides outlining the different ways of how innovation is achieved, Dr. Mauch emphasized the importance of innovation management. One focus of innovation always has to be the added customer value. The integration of application knowledge into the development process is therefore crucial for success.
Besides the two different innovation approaches already described, Dr. Mauch also presented the concept of so called “open innovation”. Open innovation is a method to include external people and their ideas into the innovation process of a company. Usually these people provide their ideas for free and receive a share of the profit in case their idea is accepted and transformed into a product. SCHOTT tested this concept in an open innovation contest looking for a new application for glass tubes with polyangular cross section. Besides receiving ideas from over sixty countries, the contest also made the name SCHOTT more popular around the globe.
After the very interesting talk by Dr. Mauch and a discussion in the plenary session we continued the discussion in a more informal way with snacks and drinks. As topics moved away from innovation, Dr. Mauchs experience as executive vice president of SCHOTT Asia lead to a very interesting experience exchange between him and Alumni with an Asian centered internship. After almost two and a half hours of talk and discussion we had to leave the university premises and continued the discussion with a slightly smaller group in a pub located in the old city center of Aachen.
The evening was very interesting for all participating Alumni. It connected Alumni in different career stages and from different study backgrounds and received a very positive feedback from all sides. Furthermore it gave the LUC Aachen the great opportunity to gain insides into a core process for future success of an international technology company. Being able to listen to a high class speaker like Dr. Mauch within the rather intimate UNITECH group was a unique experience and we appreciated it very much. The LUC Aachen wants to especially thank Dr. Mauch for coming to Aachen and Claudia Müller for making this event possible!

Kick off meeting UAA Council and LCC, Darmstadt

October 21-23, 2011: Darmstadt, Germany

During the weekend October 21st-23rd the UAA council met with the local chapter coordinators (LCC) for this year’s kickoff meeting in Darmstadt. Most of the people arrived on Friday evening and enjoyed some drinks at Roman’s place.

On Saturday we started with a warm welcome of the new council members and LCCs in our rows. Continuing with the very productive collaboration with the UTI office, David and Emma joined our meeting as well. Saturday morning was dedicated to an introduction of the UAA and UTI and updates from UTI office. During our lunch break we split up in three groups to brainstorm about the future of the UAA. We then spent Saturday afternoon introducing the LCCs to their new job and discussing the goals they set themselves for the upcoming year. Last point on Saturday’s agenda was the presentation of the UAA budget for the upcoming year. For dinner we went to a traditional German brewery and enjoyed a nice evening in the company of even more UAA members.

A highlight of the weekend was Sunday’s LCC and UTI workshop on the UNITECH promotion in which they came up with valuable input for UTI and developed a consistent process for all universities. In parallel, we established a common understanding of our collaboration within the council and distributed tasks outside our job description. Afterwards, we discussed the status of the UAA symposium and set up a timeline for the remaining tasks. In the end, we met up altogether to wrap up our meetings and collect feedback from everyone.

We are very happy with the discussions we had, the ideas we collected and especially with the results achieved during Sunday’s LCC and UTI workshop. We also managed to intensive our good relation to Emma and David and we look forward to our future collaboration.

LUC Switzerland: Discovering the Swiss Far East by cheering pigs

October 15, 2011: St. Gallen, Switzerland

Early on Saturday morning, LUC Switzerland met at the Zurich main station. All equipped with a train ticket and warm clothes we were ready to leave for St. Gallen. The one-hour train trip suggested a good possibility to chat with coffee, orange juice and croissants – and so we did.

In St. Gallen, our group was enriched by even more members joining. At this stage we were complete and had all possible stakeholder of our network were present: new students, alumni members, the UTI office, our academic and one corporate partner. The day started promising.
The morning’s objective was to get to know St. Gallen. Therefore we made a city tour to understand the importance of the textile industry and its relation to the United States of America, to taste the OLMA sausage without mustard, to marvel at the UNESCO world heritage cathedral, to relate a pilgrim to a bear bringing wood for the fire, to discover Santiago Calatrava’s architectural playground, to sample some Swiss Eastern chocolate and last but not least to analyse St. Gallen’s famous bay windows.

Having arrived at the end of our tour, we felt ready to warm up by heading towards the second objective of the day: the OLMA fair! The OLMA is a traditional agricultural fair which offers to all, foreigners and Non-Eastern Swiss, an excellent platform for discovering Swiss Eastern traditions and customs. That’s why we ended up in the “Chässtobe”, tasting Fondue, Swiss cheese and a fitting Swiss white wine. After the long walk in the morning we were happy to nip an excellent wine and taste local food within a vibrant atmosphere of our group.

However our Swiss Eastern experience would not have been so valuable if we would not have got to know what was the pig about. In consequence we moved further to the arena where the show was about to start: the OLMA’s one and only piggy race! Among 8’000 others we cheered the pigs up to their best performance. It was impressive how the crowd can get excited because of a piggy race – us included. (see video)

All in all, we think that our group got to know what it means to get a Swiss Eastern cultural injection. For us as facilitator it was our greatest pleasure to see how numerous we were and how well our stakeholders have been present at the event! Besides the piggy race this was of course the biggest success and it really motivates us as Local Chapter Coordinators to organize more of these events. Thank you!

LUC Spain: Welcome Event

October 5th, Barcelona

On the 5th of October, we, the LUC Barcelona, organized our first event for the recently started UNITECH year 2011/12. We wanted to start this new year of the program giving a warm welcome to the new incoming students: this first semester six in total, from Germany, France and Sweden. Nevertheless, this occasion was also the perfect chance to meet people from different years. While some of us were “veterans”, the other were just recently graduated Alumni, full of energy and motivation. We had time to update each other about our lives, experiences and future plans, both professional and personal. In total we were about 15 persons and we had an interesting and pleasant evening.
The location was excellent: a “Basque country - tapas restaurant” in the center of the old city center. We had the opportunity to taste “Txakoli”, a sort of white wine from north Spain, especially from Basque land.  For sure, fresh vegetables and excellent meat where part of the Mediterranean-Menu.
During the evening we agreed on activities that could be organized and became a feeling of who is part of the LUC, which makes possible to focus on topics which interest most of us. We also planned roughly our next event, which will take place in December, just in time to end the year with a bright UNITECH spirit.
I want to thank everyone who joined and also the ones who wanted and unfortunately couldn’t. I hope to see you and much more next time!

Annual Reunion 2011, Gothenburg

August 25th-27th, Gothenburg

The Annual Reunion marks the moment of the year, when the entire network comes together to welcome the new students, celebrate the graduates and keep the network active and alive. This year, the Annual Reunion took place from August 25th to 27th at Chalmers University in Gothenburg, Sweden. For the UAA, this was and is an important event, because it offers us the possibility to present ourselves to the various stakeholders of UNITECH. This year we used the opportunity to

  • Talk to the corporate partner and academic partners, especially the new ones, and encourage them to join the 2012 Symposium
  • Discuss within the various UTI meetings the future of UNITECH
  • Present our work and the future plans to the General Assembly
  • Offer Alumni the chance to join the events, including the Gala Dinner
  • And of course ensure the fun and social part of the week with the UAA party on Friday night and the Social Programme on Saturday.

The most official part for the UAA is the General Assembly, which has to be held according to our constitution. This year, this meeting saw one of the first real elections for a council position. The new council now consists of:

  • Roman Stiehl, President
  • Therese Johannson, Vice-President
  • Matteo Colombo, Financial Officer
  • Marta Serrabou, Communications Officer
  • Jona Hampe, Local Chapter Coordination Officer
  • Laura Ramperez, International Sessions Officer

In addition, the General Assembly appointed three new Honorary Members. This is an honour that is given to “special benefactors, whom the Associaion would like to thank for their outstanding commitment to the development and growth of the UNITECH network". We understand this as a contribution that goes beyond the job profile and shows great passion for UNITECH. The following three people have surely shown these qualities in the past years:

  • Ernst Schmachtenberg, former President of UNITECH International and rector of RWTH Aachen
  • Gerhard Warnick, former treasurer of UNITECH International
  • Emma Zeisberger, current UNITECH Programme manager

We would like to congratulate them and look forward to a new level of cooperation with them.

After the official part with the General Assembly and the Gradutation Ceremony, it was time for celebrations and relaxing. The UAA tradionally organises a party on Friday night for everybody attending the Gala Dinner. We did so also in Gothenburg and were happy to see many people enjoying themselves on the dancefloor and at the bar. To close the intense days, we also organised a social programme on Saturday with a long brunch, a trip to the achipelago and a closing dinner back in Gothenburg. Despite the rainy weather, many people joined and enjoyed a very relaxed day and night.

You can find all the pictures of the days in Gothenburg here.

LUC Germany: Summer Barbecue

August 1st: Aachen

For the last event in the 2010/2011 term, some weeks before the GA in Gothenburg takes place, the LUC Germany gathered for a summer barbecue event. Around 20 people joined this evening in Manuel Opitz (student of 2011) garden. Just like Manuel, other outgoings of this year met with UNITECH students of last year, who just came back to Aachen with a backpack full of experience, and, of course, UAA members of many different years. The UNITECH spirit was fostered by the idea that everybody contributed with something home-made: Salads as a side dish for the sausages and meat, some bread or delicious desserts.
We started at 7 pm and where lucky that the weather was just perfect for this evening: Not as bad as in the weeks before, making it a real summer evening. Quickly everybody who signed up and even some spontaneous attendees showed up and then gathered around the grill, the tables and benches. We fired up the big barbecue grill and enjoyed the meat with the bread and salads. The open atmosphere made it possible to talk to everyone and to share UNITECH experience. The outgoings had the chance to ask their last questions, the outgoings from last year shared their fresh experience and made everyone jealous and the UAA members answered last minute UNITECH related questions. Enjoying the desserts many of us stayed far into the night.
This evening made us realize that the long summer barbecue tradition in the LUC Germany should and hopefully will go on for many years.

LUC Germany: RUG Frankfurt: Seeking the sun at the Rhine

July 30th: Mainz

After the first meeting of our brand-new Regional Unitech Group (RUG) Frankfurt taking place at the more eastern limits of the Rhine-Main area in Hanau, we focussed this event on the possibilities in the West, to take advantage of the city of Mainz and the Rhine river. Ten Unitech alumni, students and CP representatives meet at high noon at Mainz central station in order to grab some rental bikes and proceed to the popular grocery market taking place in the shade of the cathedral every Saturday. Together we strolled along the market booths, enjoying the smell and look of all the fresh vegetables, cheese, meat and wine from the rural areas of the Rhineland and Palatinate regions. Our mission was to collect everything needed for a nice barbecue and we managed well to grab a nice selection of delicacies, with only some rays of sun missing in our bags.

Equipped like this we set out with our bikes for a quest along the Rhine towards the south to maybe discover some nicer weather down there. We followed the ancient roman paths along the riverside up to the village of Bodenheim where a nice barbecue spot was already waiting for us on the hills above the village and deep inside the vineyards. Preparing food was again a true Unitech action with everybody actively involved in putting together what we got at the market before. In the end, we could avoid the rain but despite our hopes the sun didn't show up at the sky. So after riding back to Mainz we adjusted climatic conditions ourselves enjoying some hot teas and cold drinks in one of the local bars before everybody left again for their hometown.

The next RUG event will take place in the heart of the Rhine-Main area in Frankfurt, some weeks after the GA in Göteborg, with more information to be announced real soon. UAA Council: 3rd Meeting

July 1st-3rd: Alp Flix, Switzerland

As he will leave the council at the next Annual Reunion, Samuel insisted to invite the council for the UAA council meeting to his family's hut, located at 2000m above sea level, in a remote and beautiful location in the Swiss Alps. It was a great scenery for his and Emanuela's last council meeting. But it was not only time to say Goodbye. We were very happy that David Ward joined us as the new Secretary General of UTI. Together we discussed about future initiatives and our collaboration in general. It was a very open atmosphere, which we all like to maintain, to ensure together we will achieve the best for UNITECH. Within the council we also looked back at the last year and evaluated our work to find possibilities to improve. In general we received positive feedback from you and therefore decided to implement only smaller changes, which you will see throughout the next years in our services, Local Chapters and international events. The focus of our work lies now on the final planning of the Annual Reunion. You will receive more information on logistics in the next weeks. In parallel we are also already planning the next Winter Session, which we will call UAA Symposium 2012, to emphasize the professional nature of the event that we want to create again.

LUC Germany: Foundation of the Regional UNITECH Group Frankfurt

June 22nd: Hanau

As announced in the last digest, there is increased UNITECH activity in the Rhine-Main area, where you can find an interesting mix of students doing their internships, professionals and corporate partners. Many of them want to participate regularly in UNITECH events, but travelling to Aachen, where most meetings of the local chapter Germany take place, is often not possible. Therefore the idea was raised to establish a new platform of networking. We are now happy to announce that on June 22nd the Regional UNITECH Group Frankfurt was founded.

Thanks to the invitation of Evonik, we held a ceremony at their Oval Office in Hanau, where we got to know each other and discussed the main concept of this new initiative. Jan Reitz was selected to coordinate the group with the support of Janneke van Kilsdonk. We also agreed that the main principle of the group is that it is open to all UNITECHs. So whether you live here permanently, are here for a few weeks or just pass by just contact Jan Reitz at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and we will keep you updated on the next events.

Those who came to the first meeting were able to get a taste of local culture in the neighbouring city of Steinheim, a small town known for its picturesque little streets and framework houses directly at the Main River. We are looking forward to our next meeting end of July and to present our concept during the GA in Goteborg.

LUC Spain: Welcome Gathering

June 2nd: Barcelona

A brand new UNITECH generation has been selected from UPC! And therefore LUC Spain organized an event to welcome new students for a dinner in a cozy restaurant. Apart from getting to know each other such events are a great opportunity for the new students to start discovering the UNITECH world, they were showing the emotion and the interest on how this year is going to be, while older alumni were sharing experiences and answering their doubts and questions. From the alumni side we also had interesting surprises -as some of us just came back to live in Barcelona, and in such a gathering we could get a good update on their experiences abroad.

As always such meetings are far more than a welcome or networking gathering for new & old UNITECHers, but an opportunity to keep track on how everybody is doing, and this time it also became a welcome back home!

LUC Sweden: Welcoming the new UNITECH students?

Mai 31st: Gothenburg

At the very start of the summer vacation, LUC Sweden members met to welcome the new Swedish UNITECH students. We met at La Sombrita on Linnegatan to share stories over tapas and a drink. Unfortunately, only ONE new student was able to attend. The others had already left for summer vacation! However, ten current UNITECH students and alumni joined the event. UNITECH experiences and summer plans were exchanged. It was a wonderful way to kick-off the summer!

UAA Summer Session 2011, Cinque Terre

May 27th-29th: Cinque Terre, Italy

Photos are a great way to preserve your memories, but often it is hard to capture a great moment or view with your camera. 19 UAA members faced this “problem” many times at the UAA Summer Session 2011: The 5 beautiful villages of Cinque Terre, embedded in a spectacular coast, facing the dark blue sea under the bright blue sky. It is hard to capture this onto a chip. But luckily, we had two professional photographers who explained to us the technical basics of photography and the principals of good composition. We were able to practise and improve our skills when walking around the villages or taking the boat from one to the other. On the spot we learned to avoid the “auto”-modus and that photography is real art.

In the end everybody got not only some nice pictures but also a relaxing weekend with old a new friends, great weather and delicious food.

These are just some example pictures, you can find more here.

LUC Switzerland: Welcome Event

May 24th: Zurich

On Tuesday, May 24th, the LUC Switzerland experienced a welcome event in a double sense: Firstly, it was about welcoming the newly selected students from ETH to the UAA and the local chapter. Secondly, Gil Fischer and Silvan Tschopp took the chance to introduce themselves as the new LCCs as they took over this position ad interim in spring 2011.

For this occasion, a cozy wine tavern in the heart of Zurich has been chosen to meet for a drink or two. The “Oepfelchammere” (apple chamber) has been a very traditional place in town for more than 200 years and hosted famous people from all over the world. It is important to follow the strict house rules (see http://www.oepfelchammer.ch/Dokumente/Oeli_Reglement.pdf [in German only]), otherwise the waiter won’t be your friend…

The highlight of every visit at the “Oeli” is clearly the so called “Balkenprobe”. Everyone brave enough needs to pull himself up onto a beam (at about 1.9m) and has to squeeze his body underneath the ceiling to next beam. Once this – clearly most difficult part – is accomplished, the waiter offers a full glass of white wine that has to been drunk while hanging head-front from the ceiling…

Even though none of us managed to pass this challenge – neither in sober state nor after one, two glasses of wine – the evening was a great success. Thanks to everybody for joining!

LUC Netherlands: Experience Exchange

April 21st: Delft

LUC Germany: Welcome Skittles with New Students

April 4th: Aachen

To welcome the outgoing students the LUC Aachen organized a night of skittles at a local pub. After introducing the UAA to the students and informing them about our activities, we started to play skittles. Skittles is a game similar to bowling however there are slight differences. The ball is smaller and does not have holes. This in combination with only 9 pins makes skittles rather challenging as we discovered while playing. Being a very traditional game in Germany there a many ways to play skittles, each requiring different group sizes and objectives. The group was mixed a lot during the different games and conversations around the different host universities, the joint modules, accommodation and all the other exiting questions everyone has when starting UNITECH began.
Besides playing skittles and getting to know the new outgoings we had a special guest that night. The new Academic Coordinator Prof. Gries from the textile institute ITA joint us for the evening. Besides introducing himself he saved the night by fearlessly climbing into the pin set up machine and repairing it.  (We herewith thank you once again Prof. Gries)
The skittles night was a lot of fun, triggered good conversations and got the new outgoings connected to the UAA. In fact they are already getting involved and supporting the upcoming LUC Aachen Summer Barbecue  by providing the location.

UAA Council: 2nd Meeting

March 24th - 26th: Darmstadt

In between the Winter and the Summer Session and with the Annual Reunion approaching, the UAA Council met for the second time during this UNITECH year in order to discuss what has been done in the last months and to plan what is ahead of us. With respect to events, we

  • decided on minor changes to the format of the Winter Session, which we will again organize next year.
  • finalized the remaining details of the Summer Session
  • spent most of our time on working out the responsibilities and logistics of the Annual Reunion in Gothenburg. You will receive the invitation in the beginning of May.

Another important topic was the updated website. Besides minor changes to its visual appeal, there is now an internal area. At first we will use the internal section to share documents among the council members and LCCs, but as soon as we have found a good way to give access to all members, we will share this section with you. Until then it will support us in storing the accumulated knowledge and experience that we have gained over the years,  and to make sure future new council members do not have to start from scratch all over again.

LUC Netherlands welcome event

February 24, 2011: Delft

On Thursday the 24h of February, LUC Netherlands organised a welcome event for the UNITECH students who just arrived for their academic exchange. Nine people, including the three UNITECH exchange students, joined the evening and had dinner and drinks together in a local restaurant in Delft. It was a great evening and we wish the newly arrived UNITECH students good luck and a lot of fun during their exchange.

We will keep you posted about the next LUC events, which we are currently planning. As one of our goals for LUC Netherlands is to diversify our activities more into the spirit of the UAA, the next event will be more content-driven.

Hope to see you soon!

LUC Germany Assessment Center Training

January 26th, 2011: Aachen

After promoting UNITECH at RWTH in November, the LUC Germany continued to support the UNITECH application process by offering an assessment center training to UNITECH applicants and its members. In front of round about 20 interested listeners Christian Wilms and Florian Garms presented general information about what are the goals of an assessment center and how that reflects on the tasks given to the participants. After some introductory remarks by RWTH academic coordinator Prof. Malte Brettel the presenters gave their personal insight in general preparation that helps to reduce nervousness and to ensure self confidence during an assessment center.

Following the general remarks detailed tasks within an assessment center where discussed; group discussion, presentation and interview. Group discussions can be started with different topics. However no matter if the group is discussing a hypothesis, developing a solution or evaluating a situation from a different perspective in a role play situation, a result which reflects a group consensus is the desired outcome of the group work during an assessment center. To give the participants an idea of difficulties which can occur within the group process depending on the group composition two different examples where discussed within the group. One of which focused on dealing with a lack of initiative to collaborate and while the other one tackled the problem of dealing with a group full off highly motivated alpha players. The discussion was enriched by the personal experience of the workshop leaders.

Regarding the presentation basic topics such as presentation structure and story telling via action title where briefly addressed. The main focus was put on the situation of presenting with a flip chart and how that is best adapted in the personal presentation style. Different from using a projector using a flip chart does not allow an instant slide change, only provides limited space to present ideas in a readable font size and requires a clear handwriting. Via a demonstration dealing with these challenges this was shown to the participants with special emphasize on how to manage a fluent chart transition without losing eye contact or on how to talk to the chart and not to the audience. The presentation section was closed with advice on gesture, mimic and posture during a presentation.

The training was closed with a section on how to prepare for an assessment center interview. Within this section the general interview situation was discussed and the importance of the non verbal communication during an assessment center was emphasized. After the closing remarks the participants where very pleased and the event was a great success.

2011 Winter Session

February 18th - 20th: Hamburg

“Bridging Gaps” was the theme of the 2011 UAA Winter Session. More than 40 UNITECH Alumni and Corporate Partners met in Hamburg to discuss the question “How do you tackle differences in your daily work?” Located within an old water-tower, the conference facilities set the perfect frame for many interesting talks and workshops. If you look at the pictures you will see some cards, which Willemijn Brouwer used to mix people and set them up for individual talks over lunch. You will also be able to see the balloons with which Marta Chicano demonstrated the different regions of our brains. Also David Ward presented one of his ideas in the opening workshop. In addition we were able to implement the feedback from last year's session and with Dorothy Leo, Klaas-Jürgen Clasen, and Stephan Behle three senior CP represantatives shared some of their experiences during their talks. Together with the social program on Sunday, it was a great weekend with old and new friends, interesting conversations and last but not least a lot of fun!

You can find the rest of the pictures here
